Welcome to my online classroom.
Dear Parents of My Sweet First Graders,
I hope you all are well and stay that way! I miss my first graders and our days together. Please tell them that I think of them daily and look forward to being back together again as soon as we can!
While we are out of school, I encourage you to read daily with your child. Have your child read to you as much as possible. The public library has lots of books, on first grade level, that can be checked out for 3 weeks at a time. The children’s librarian will be happy to show you where these books can be found. Storyline Online is a fun website to hear books read aloud by well-known actors, etc.
Two Dolch Word Lists are in your child’s blue binder. Please have your child read these words to you, making sure that all words are learned. I will continue to send (through DoJo and/or on this page) additional vocabulary lists that we would be learning in class.
During this time, students can work on memorization of math facts through the sums of 10. The goal is 36 problems in 3 minutes. I have been giving them 4 minutes with the goal of reducing the time to 3 minutes by the end of the year. Almost all facts have been introduced. We are currently working on fact families of 10.
Also, in math we will be learning 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. I have posted a free Brain Pop, Jr. website for use.
I will continue sending spelling word lists for your child to learn. Have them write a sentence using one or more of the words, that you dictate for them. Please check for punctuation, as well as, correct spelling. They enjoy writing a “dictated sentence” and having it checked!
Creative writing can be encouraged using “sticker stories.” I put a sticker at the top of a page for them to use as a story starter or main idea. You can use pictures from magazines, photos, websites, etc.
I will post some websites for you and your child to use together.
If you have any questions, you may contact me through DoJo.
With love to my children,
